Despite its name, Friday Market or “Souk” in arabic is open all week-long within the town of Masafi. This market is located an isolated area in the middle of a mountainous region and sells your typical touristy souvenirs but offers some awesome rare finds!
Background Info: The town Masafi, popularized by the water bottle name in the UAE is a town within Fujairah Emirate. FYI, United Arab Emirates is made up of seven emirates or provinces, one of which is Fujairah. Fujairah is not as popular as Abu Dhabi or Dubai but it’s definitely a tourism contender.
Friday Market is on Dhaid road on the path to Fujairah city. Our tour guide pulled over and allowed us to walk around the souk. This souk is quit different from others because here you will find a farmers market. UAE is known for luxury, to find a simple farmers market is like finding a needle in a haystack, it’s rare! Here I found a large variety of fruits, vegetables and outdoor nursery with flowers/plants.
While walking alongside the road,I saw a shopkeeper serving coconut drinks. Yup, serving coconut water right out of the coconut! He gave it to me with a straw and I drank fresh water right out of the coconut! I thought this was pretty cool. I’ve only seen this on TV or google images but never experienced it in person. Bucketlist Check! BTW it was really good.
There is much more than just fruit, you’ll find oriental carpet stores as well. I found it odd to sell carpets in the middle of no where but it must be great for locals. I can’t imagine a tourist buying carpets here. The carpet stores workers were from Afghanistan and spoke enough English or Arabic to haggle. BTW, if you have not haggled before, this is a great place to start! There were a lot of carpet stores, much more than I assumed would be needed in this isolate market.
It was really cool there was the antique finds. There were a few stores that sold antique Arabic accessories and household goods. Not your everyday type stuff that could be purchased in a discount store but official authentic, historic Arabic goods that can only be found in places like this one!I walked inside the store and found great finds like furniture, cabinet chests, small carpets, bags, shoes, pots, pans, portraits, candle holders etc.
A lot of this stuff is handmade! I really enjoyed seeing the pottery section, the clay pots had a beautiful middle-eastern design! I would have bought it was not a hassle to carry it around during my tour.
Overall, this is a great stop over point when going to Fujairah!
