Al Bastakiya البستكية‎ (Old Dubai) – Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai; magnificent skyscrapers, modern high rises, lavish malls and beautiful beaches.  This is a lifestyle guru’s ultimate destination.  This city is ultra modern and I yearned to see some culture.  It’s modeled so much like Western cities that I felt like it was the Arab Version of NYC.  Luckily I found out about Al Bastakiya region (Arabic: البستكية‎) which is a historic district in Dubai.  Al Bastakiya quarter dates back to the 1890’s and is the oldest region in Dubai.  It was nearly destroyed in the 1970’s in an effort to modernize Dubai. Out with the old and in with the New.  However, thankfully only half the region was taken down and the remaining portion was preserved.   It was a breath of fresh air wandering through this quarter.  This is the reason why I traveled to the middle east, to introduce myself to culture and not high rises.  Enjoy the pictures!

  1. I love those little architectural details you zoomed in on. Such a shame that the other have of that region was torn down. What’s left looks like a place I would love to get lost in. 🙂

    • Yeah I was really saddened to learn it was torn down! I think the old town is the best part to visit, especially in the middle east. What was left though is amazing. A great place to wander around and take it all in.
